My Sister's Journey

My mission for this brand is to advocate for comfort and confidence in life’s luscious ‘now’ moments. Confidence in ourselves, each other and this world. I believe wholeheartedly that happiness, confidence and comfort come from within. This year has brought everyone their own set of challenges. Some days are amazing and others are tough. Some days we hurt and others flourish. Mental wellness has always been a main driver for me behind building this brand. Waverles to me is so much more than clothing.

On a personal note, my sister became very ill this past year. I’ve learned a lot about the mental health system, some findings better than others. What I’ve learned the most is that there is a HUGE need for advocacy in the mental health space. This advocacy and communication is not only needed for those struggling with their mental health personally, but also those who have someone they love on a journey to find mental wellness.

Over this last year, my sister has moved through the mental health system — countless appointments, limited information, and weeks away from her husband, children and family. We ultimately learned she was misdiagnosed, but by then it was unfortunately too late. Too late to make up for lost time, too late to realize her last Christmas would be spent in a mental health facility, just too late. She passed away this week from FTD (frontotemporal dementia), a rare brain disease commonly mistaken for mental illness. She was taken too fast and too soon.

My sister was a beautiful, smart, caring mother of two. I’ve struggled with the confidence to share, communicate, and help others learn from my family’s journey. While in many ways I feel like everything was “too late”, I am hoping that my sister, Daria, can inspire us all to live our lives to the fullest, ask questions, advocate, communicate.
